My Story...the short, short version
When I was going through infertility the first time around, for 3.5 years I struggled in silence. When I was ready, I joined RESOLVE and found a local support group to attend. Within the first 3 meetings, due to the overwhelming support I received, we were on our way to see the reproductive specialist. My son is now 21 months old and we are once again seeking infertility treatments as we try to expand our family. We have experienced a total of five and a half years of infertility, one successful pregnancy and one miscarriage.
Finding Fertile Ground (a.k.a. The long version)
Fertile Ground
When we are infertile
We turn inward
We grow like plants grow in the fall and winter
We grow downward,
Spreading our roots wide as we reach around in the darkness for something familiar
While the cold has enclosed around our world and everything seems barren,
We use the time to dig deeper
We learn to do what feels right
We learn to listen to our inner voice and to see with our instinct
and in the end,
When the sun begins to warm the air and we recognize
That there might be hope out there after all,
We have changed.
By the time we become mothers, biological or otherwise,
We are strong.
We stand taller and we stand prouder
Because through the darkness, we continued to grow
Downward
Building a root structure large and round and encompassing
Wider than our trunk
One that reaches beyond where we thought we could travel
A root system strong enough to support a tree to hold a thousand birds on its branches.
And you ask, “How did you do it? Where did you find the strength?”
Our secret is buried
Deep within our fertile ground.
